Tempo Digital Introduces New Revenue Stream via AI Content Licensing
Tempatdonasi.com – Tempo Digital, the business arm of Tempo Media Group, has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to supply journalistic content and data to artificial intelligence platforms. This move, announced today, aims to establish Tempo as a reliable source for AI developers seeking high-quality, structured material to enhance their algorithms. By doing so, the company seeks to adapt to the evolving digital landscape while ensuring creators are fairly compensated for their work.
The strategy unfolds in two interconnected phases. Initially, Tempo will implement a content blocking system to control how its material is accessed by AI systems. This involves restricting unauthorized bots that extract, archive, and repurpose Tempo’s content without permission. In parallel, the company is creating a formal channel for AI entities to access its content legally, transparently, and with measurable terms. This transition from ad-hoc harvesting to a regulated framework is facilitated through the OpenMined infrastructure, a platform designed for secure data sharing.
AI developers and tech firms can now access Tempo’s content via this dedicated portal, which allows for flexible access models such as pay-per-use. Each content retrieval is subject to licensing agreements that define usage parameters, including the type of content, volume, purpose, and economic value. This system ensures that Tempo maintains control over how its material is integrated into AI systems, while also generating a sustainable revenue stream.
“Tempo’s approach is not about obstructing AI innovation but about fostering a balanced ecosystem where creators are recognized and rewarded for their contributions,” explained Wahyu Dhyatmika, Director of Digital Transformation at Tempo Media Group. “By introducing a formal licensing process, we aim to preserve the integrity of journalistic content while enabling AI platforms to leverage it responsibly.”
Reimagining the Role of Media in an AI-Driven World
Tempo’s initiative reflects its response to the seismic shifts in how information is distributed and consumed. Since the early months of 2025, AI-powered tools have become central to the news discovery process. Search engines, AI-driven summaries, and generative chatbots now deliver content directly to users, often bypassing traditional publisher websites—a phenomenon dubbed “zero click.” This shift has disrupted the conventional flow of traffic and advertising revenue, posing challenges for media organizations.
Tempo has observed a significant decline in its audience engagement metrics. In 2025 alone, the company reported a 33.5% drop in pageviews compared to 2024, alongside a 19.4% reduction in user numbers. These figures highlight the pressure on media outlets to adapt as AI platforms increasingly become the primary gateways to news. Programmatic advertising revenue, which historically depended on visitation rates and ad impressions, has also suffered due to this trend.
Despite these challenges, Tempo emphasizes the critical role of journalistic content in refining AI outputs. Human-curated news remains vital for ensuring accuracy, relevance, and credibility in automated systems. However, the current model often allows AI developers to exploit this content without proper acknowledgment or compensation, creating an imbalance in economic value distribution.
From Blockage to Open Data Marketplace
Tempo’s strategy begins with a content restriction phase. The company has started blocking AI bots responsible for retrieving and storing its material for algorithmic training. These bots include crawlers, search engines, and archivers that operate without user consent. According to Heru Tjatur Tjahja, Chief Technology Officer at Tempo Digital, this blockage is implemented incrementally to assess its impact on distribution efficiency, server performance, and the broader digital business operations.
“The staged blockage enables us to monitor how these restrictions affect content availability and system load,” said Heru Tjatur Tjahja. “Once we evaluate the outcomes, we will ensure a smooth transition to the OpenMined platform, which offers a structured and equitable framework for data exchange.”
During this phase, bots used for general search engines are handled separately to avoid hindering users’ ability to access Tempo’s information. If AI systems wish to continue using the company’s content, they will be redirected to the OpenMined channel. This approach not only safeguards Tempo’s intellectual property but also positions the company as a strategic partner in the AI content market.
Heru further noted that Tempo’s strategy extends beyond mere access control. The company is transforming the current chaotic content-harvesting process into a formalized, mutually beneficial partnership between content creators and technology firms. This shift ensures that AI platforms can still benefit from Tempo’s material while adhering to clear guidelines on usage, attribution, and compensation.
Collaboration with OpenMined and Industry Partners
The initiative is supported by a collaborative effort involving OpenMined, the Australian Media and Information Security Institute (AMSI), and the International Federation of Press Publishers (IFPIM). OpenMined, a non-profit organization, specializes in developing open-source tools that enable secure and controlled data access. Its infrastructure underpins Tempo’s new licensing model, ensuring that content usage is monitored and that data owners retain authority over their material.
By partnering with these entities, Tempo aims to create a scalable solution for media companies worldwide. The OpenMined platform allows for the anonymization and secure sharing of data, making it easier for AI developers to integrate journalistic content without compromising privacy. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to balancing technological advancement with ethical data practices.
The long-term goal is to use revenue from AI content licensing to support independent, investigative journalism. As programmatic advertising income declines, Tempo envisions this new revenue model as a lifeline for sustaining high-quality reporting. The company’s proactive stance reflects a broader industry movement to reclaim control over content distribution in the age of AI.
With this launch, Tempo Digital is not only redefining its relationship with AI platforms but also setting a precedent for how media organizations can monetize their work in an increasingly automated world. The initiative highlights the necessity of adapting to new technologies while preserving the foundational principles of journalism and data ownership.
