The most recent event, recorded on Sunday at 15:11 Western Indonesian Time, registered a magnitude of 4.8 and was felt throughout several districts until Monday morning, July 20, 2026.

The Latest Earthquake Event

According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), this seismic activity originated from the southern waters of West Java. The tremor’s epicenter was positioned 79 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi Regency, placing it firmly within the ocean rather than on land.

Wijayanto, who serves as the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, explained that the earthquake was classified as shallow. This classification stems from rock deformation activity occurring at the ocean floor. The shaking intensity varied across different locations, with the strongest vibrations reaching intensity scale III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.

“The earthquake is classified as shallow due to rock deformation activity at the bottom of the sea,” said Wijayanto.

At this intensity level, people inside buildings reported feeling vibrations similar to those experienced when a heavy truck passes nearby. The affected areas included Cikotok, Kalapanunggal, Cidolog, Cisaat, Simpenan, Sukabumi City, Nagrak, Panggarangan, Cimahi, Banjaran, Lembang, Parompong, Cililin, Sariwangi, Katapang, Bandung, Cianjur, Ciwidey, Ciawi, Cikole, and Pelabuhan Ratu.

Meanwhile, residents in Soreang, Ciracap, and Bogor experienced milder shaking at intensity scale II MMI. At this level, only a small number of people noticed the movement, and it primarily caused light hanging objects to sway gently.

BMKG’s analysis confirmed that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat. From the initial detection phase, their modeling indicated that the seismic activity would not generate a tsunami.

Earlier Seismic Event in the Region

This weekend’s earthquake followed another significant tectonic event that occurred on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 19:47 WIB. That earthquake also affected the Sukabumi City region and surrounding areas, registering a magnitude of 4.3 according to BMKG’s updated measurements.

Hartanto, the Head of BMKG II Tangerang Region, provided details about this earlier tremor. He stated that the epicenter was located in the sea, positioned 82 kilometers southeast of Sukabumi City at a depth of 22 kilometers. Like the more recent event, this earthquake was also classified as shallow, triggered by the activity of underwater active faults.

Community reports indicated that this earlier earthquake was felt across multiple regions. Sukabumi Regency and Cianjur Regency experienced intensity scale III MMI, while Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, Garut, and Tasikmalaya Regency reported scales ranging from II to III MMI.
