Tragic Blast at Indonesian Military Storage Facility Claims One Life

Tempatdonasi.com – A devastating explosion rocked the Indonesian Military Armed Forces (TNI AD) Ammunition Warehouse II on Thursday morning, July 16, 2026. The incident took place in the Saradan District of Madiun Regency, located in East Java province. Witnesses reported hearing a tremendous bang emanating from the military complex at approximately 09:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The powerful blast was audible throughout nearby residential neighborhoods, causing concern among local residents.

The tragic event resulted in one soldier losing his life while six fellow military personnel sustained injuries of varying severity. Brigadier General Donny Pramono, who serves as the head of the TNI AD Information Department, provided details during a press conference held on the same day. According to his statement, the explosion happened while soldiers were performing routine inspection and maintenance procedures on ammunition materials stored within one of the facility’s warehouses.

“In this incident, 1 soldier was declared dead, 4 seriously injured, and 2 others lightly injured,” said Donny at a press conference on Thursday. All the victims have been evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment.

Investigation Underway

As of the time of reporting, the exact cause of the explosion remains undetermined. An investigation team has been deployed to the scene and continues its work on-site. Brigadier General Donny requested that the public allow investigators adequate space to conduct their duties effectively. He emphasized the importance of refraining from speculation until all examinations are concluded.

“We also invite everyone to avoid speculating about the causes of the incident before the entire examination process is completed,” he said.

The military has taken measures to secure the affected area. Access to the ammunition warehouse has been restricted exclusively to members of the investigation team. Donny explained that the location has been thoroughly cleared and secured, with entry granted only in stages to authorized personnel.

“The place is definitely secured, everything is cleared, it’s closed off. Only the investigation team is allowed in. And the investigation team is not allowed to enter casually, it’s done in stages,” said Donny.

Political Response and Recommendations

Tubagus Hasanuddin, a member of the DPR Commission I, called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the tragedy. He stressed that both elements are crucial for preventing future occurrences of similar accidents. Hasanuddin also suggested that authorities should evaluate whether ammunition warehouses are positioned too near populated areas.

“I also encourage an evaluation of the placement of ammunition warehouses if their location is too close to residential areas,” said Hasanuddin to Tempo on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

According to the parliament member, if the current warehouse location fails to meet established safety distance requirements, relocation away from residential zones should be considered. This precautionary measure would help minimize risks to nearby communities.

Recent History of Ammunition Incidents

The Madiun explosion is not an isolated event. Between 2024 and 2025, Indonesia experienced at least three separate ammunition-related incidents that resulted in casualties and property damage. The first occurred on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the TNI AD Kodam Jaya Ammunition Warehouse situated in Ciangsana Village, Gunung Putri District, Bogor Regency, West Java. That incident produced no casualties, though the blast originated from Ammunition Warehouse No. 6, which had been emitting smoke. The facility contained expired ammunition estimated to be more than a decade old.

The second incident took place on March 4, 2025, when a mortar bomb detonated during training exercises conducted by Brimob personnel. The accident occurred at the Brimob Unit Headquarters, specifically within the Subden Jibom Gegana Detachment, Surabaya Brimob Sat facility. Ten personnel sustained injuries in this event.

The third and most severe incident happened on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the TNI AD Pusat Amunisi III located in Cibalong District, Garut Regency, West Java. The explosion occurred while military personnel were in the process of destroying unusable ammunition. Tragically, thirteen individuals lost their lives, including four TNI AD soldiers and nine civilians.
