2. Menutup pintu, jendela, dan sumber air — Seal domestic spaces. Doors, windows, and any open household water sources (rain barrels, uncovered storage tanks) should be kept shut to prevent ash from settling inside living areas or entering the domestic water supply.

The Jakarta Provincial Government is maintaining continuous liaison with several national bodies to monitor the eruption’s trajectory and intensity. These include the central government’s disaster apparatus, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Geological Agency under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). “As is known, Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Alert Level III, or Siaga status. Currently, volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau has spread to several regions in Indonesia, including Jakarta,” Pramono stated during the broadcast.

He emphasized that the severity and geographic footprint of ashfall remain heavily dependent on prevailing wind patterns, meaning the situation can shift within hours. Atmospheric tracking therefore continues around the clock.

Countering Misinformation

Beyond physical safety, the governor urged Jakartans to remain calm and to verify information before sharing it. In periods of volcanic unrest, unverified claims about eruption magnitude, evacuation orders, or water contamination tend to circulate rapidly on social platforms, sometimes outrunning official advisories and generating unnecessary panic.

“On occasions like this, we ask Jakarta residents to monitor information from official channels of the central government, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and not to spread information that has not been properly verified,” Pramono said.

Health Implications for Vulnerable Groups

Respirable volcanic ash poses disproportionate risks to children, elderly residents, and individuals with pre-existing pulmonary or ocular conditions. Fine silica particles penetrate deep into bronchial passages and can trigger acute bronchitis or exacerbate asthma. Ocular exposure may cause conjunctivitis or, in severe cases, corneal abrasion.
