Antasyafi Robby Claims First World Climbing Series Gold in Guiyang

The 19-year-old prevailed on Friday, September 11, at the Guizhou Caihu International Climbing Center in Guiyang, producing a winning run of 4.65 seconds in the medal round. China’s Ling Yongzhi finished second in 4.75 seconds, while fellow Chinese climber Chu Shouhong secured bronze with 4.80 seconds. Japan’s Ryo Omasa was also among the athletes Robby overcame on his route to the title.

The victory gave Robby his first gold medal in this year’s World Climbing Series after he had previously taken silver in both Madrid and Chamonix. It also reinforced his position at the top of the 2026 men’s individual speed rankings, where he holds 2,864 points.

A Consistent Run Through the Bracket

Robby showed early signs of his pace during qualification, recording 4.831 seconds to move into the Round of 16. From there, he consistently posted the leading time in each stage of the elimination draw.

In the Round of 16, he stopped the clock at 5.19 seconds, finishing ahead of Iran’s Reza Alipour Shenazandifard as well as Italian climbers Luca Robbiati and Francesco Ponzinibio. Although the time was slower than some of his later efforts, it was sufficient to keep him advancing in a format where every head-to-head race can quickly decide an athlete’s day.

His speed increased in the quarterfinals, where he registered 4.84 seconds. That result placed him in front of Alipour, Italy’s Matteo Zurloni, and China’s Qihang Xu. Robby maintained that form in the semifinals with a 4.82-second climb, defeating Omasa, China’s Ziyu Zhou, and Alipour to reach the decisive round.

After sealing the win, Robby dedicated the achievement to his mother in an emotional message.

Robby also said he had not anticipated surpassing his personal best. His three earlier defeats in World Climbing Series competition became an important source of motivation, encouraging him to sharpen his speed and continue improving. Even after reaching the top of the podium, he stressed that his development is not complete, particularly in the technical side of climbing.

Indonesia Eyes More Medals in Relay Competition

Head coach Galar Pandu Asmoro praised Robby’s achievement and looked ahead to the speed relay event. The individual title has raised hopes that Indonesia can add further medals before the Guiyang competition concludes.

“We hope to secure more medals in the relay event,” Galar said.

Other Indonesian climbers also featured prominently in the event, though they did not reach the medal podium. Raharjati Nursamsa exited in the semifinals of the men’s competition. In the women’s field, Rajiah Sallsabillah was eliminated at the semifinal stage, while Adi Asih and Berthdigna Devi Surya saw their campaigns end in the quarterfinals.

For Robby, however, Guiyang represented a breakthrough after coming close to a title twice earlier in the season. His silver medals in Madrid and Chamonix established him as a leading contender, while the gold in China confirmed his ability to convert that consistency into the top result.
