The consequences are not shared equally. Martin Röösli, an environmental scientist at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, said people with fewer resources can face greater exposure and fewer ways to protect themselves.

If that were the complete explanation, mortality would be expected to fall below normal levels in the weeks after a heat event. That pattern did not emerge. Schneider therefore believes that a substantial share of people who died during the heat could otherwise have survived for months or even years.
