That mechanism weighs multiple variables simultaneously: the prevailing price of crude oil on global markets, the exchange rate of the rupiah against the U.S. dollar, applicable excise and value-added taxes, and broader indicators of consumer purchasing power.

“The price adjustments apply only to several non-subsidized fuel products, namely Pertamax Turbo, Pertamina Dex and Dexlite. Other non-subsidized fuels, including Pertamax 92 and Pertamax Green 95, remain unchanged.”

Andhora added that the decision-making process also factored in prevailing economic conditions and wider social considerations, signaling that the company did not treat the formula as a purely mechanical exercise but weighed the macroeconomic backdrop before finalizing the new rates.

Why the Distinction Matters to Indonesian Drivers

Indonesia’s subsidized fuel program is one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Every year the state budget allocates tens of trillions of rupiah to keep Pertalite and Solar within reach of the majority of motorists, public-transport operators, and small-scale farmers. Owners of performance-oriented vehicles, commercial fleets seeking higher-efficiency diesel, and consumers who prefer lower-emission formulations gravitate toward products like Pertamax Turbo, Dexlite, and Pertamina Dex. For them, the September 1 adjustment represents a direct cost increase with no government backstop. A driver filling a 50-liter tank of Dexlite, for example, now pays Rp200,000 more per fill-up than before the hike.

Quality Commitment and Consumer Guidance

Pertamina Patra Niaga stressed that the price revision carries no implication for product quality. The company reaffirmed its obligation to maintain the same octane ratings, cetane numbers, and additive packages that define each product line. In practical terms, a liter of Pertamax Turbo RON 98 purchased at Rp19,600 is chemically identical to the liter sold at Rp18,300 before the adjustment.

The company also issued a reminder aimed at everyday motorists: select the fuel grade that matches the manufacturer’s specification for your particular vehicle. Over-fueling a standard RON 90 engine with RON 98 gasoline, for instance, does not deliver proportional performance gains and simply raises per-kilometer cost. Conversely, running a high-compression diesel engine on a lower-grade product can shorten component life. The guidance is straightforward—buy what the vehicle needs, not what is cheapest or most premium.

The timing of the increase—coinciding with the start of a new calendar month—means that household and commercial fuel budgets entering September 2026 will reflect the higher rates immediately.
