Prabowo attended the gathering on Saturday at Bharat Mandapam, where leaders met under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.” The theme places resilience, technological and institutional innovation, international cooperation, and sustainable development at the center of efforts to address global challenges.

For Indonesia, the summit provides an opportunity to present its national interests in discussions about the direction of global governance. A central part of the opening-day agenda was a closed meeting titled “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism.” The session brought together heads of state to discuss ways international frameworks can become more responsive, durable, and representative amid shared political, economic, and environmental pressures.

The discussion is significant because multilateral institutions remain key venues for countries to coordinate responses to issues that cannot be addressed by one government alone. Cooperation on development, sustainability, innovation, and global stability depends on dialogue among nations with different priorities and capacities.

Prabowo’s participation allowed Indonesia to stress the value of working through collective mechanisms rather than approaching international challenges in isolation. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the session by setting out the priorities of India’s 2026 chairship of BRICS. He emphasized an approach that places people and shared human values at the center of international progress.

“I am very pleased to welcome you all to India. India’s leadership in BRICS is based on a people-centered and humanity-first approach. Resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability have always been our priorities,” Modi said.

Modi’s remarks closely reflected the summit’s overall focus. The agenda links stronger institutions and cooperation with practical goals that affect societies, including sustainable growth, greater resilience in the face of disruption, and policies intended to support human welfare.

A Platform for Indonesia’s Foreign Policy

Indonesia’s engagement at the summit gives Jakarta a high-level setting to pursue its foreign-policy priorities and build closer ties with fellow BRICS members. Such meetings are not limited to formal speeches: they also create space for direct exchanges among leaders and for broader discussions about areas of shared interest.

Opening-Day Schedule in New Delhi

Outside the main closed-door session, Prabowo and other leaders are scheduled to visit two exhibitions: “Bharat Innovates” and “BRICS @20.” The exhibits form part of the summit program and highlight the host country’s presentation of innovation as well as the BRICS forum’s development over two decades.

The day’s activities also include an official group photograph and a ceremonial tree-planting event. These elements are customary features of major diplomatic gatherings, but they also reinforce the summit’s public emphasis on cooperation and sustainability.

The first day of the 18th BRICS Summit is set to end with a formal banquet for the participating heads of state. Alongside official sessions, these occasions provide further opportunities for leaders to meet and strengthen personal and diplomatic connections.
