In a Truth Social message on Thursday, Trump credited Polish President Karol Nawrocki for helping advance the discussions. The proposal would mark an important development in defense ties between Washington and Warsaw at a time when Poland is seeking stronger safeguards amid the continuing security pressure created by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“Thanks to the bold leadership of my friend, Karol Nawrocki, President of Poland, major progress is being made toward establishing a US Army base in Poland,” Trump wrote.

Trump said an announcement on the prospective site could follow quickly if the arrangement is finalized. He described the potential installation as a landmark moment for relations between the two countries.

“If this happens, the location will be announced very soon. This will be a historic step for our Great US/Polish Alliance,” Trump added.

Poland Offers Support for a Permanent Presence

Nawrocki welcomed the statement and said Poland was prepared to continue strengthening defense cooperation with the United States. The Polish president also indicated that his government would work to ensure the American military is offered an appropriate location for a future base.

“I can assure you that the Polish government will do its utmost to provide the best possible location for the US Army base,” Nawrocki said.

Zbigniew Bogucki, who leads the Polish president’s chancellery, called Trump’s statement positive news for Poland. He noted the timing also coincided with the 87th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland, a historical reference that underscores the country’s deep concern about security from the east.

Warsaw had already confirmed in August that it was engaged in talks with Washington over the possibility of maintaining a permanent American military presence on Polish territory. Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski said at the time that early work on the process had been completed and that political support for the idea had existed for some time.

“We have already completed the initial stage of the process, not to mention the political will, which was expressed long ago,” Zalewski said in remarks to public broadcaster TVP.

Why a Base in Poland Matters

Poland has become one of NATO’s most important eastern members since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Its location, bordering Ukraine and situated close to Russia’s sphere of military influence, has placed it at the center of allied planning for the protection of NATO’s eastern flank.

Nearly 10,000 US troops are already present in Poland. Much of that force, however, operates through rotational deployments rather than a permanently based structure. A formal US Army base could provide a more durable framework for personnel, training, logistics and cooperation with Polish forces, although details on the size, mission and timeline of any proposed facility have not been announced.

For Poland, the distinction between rotating troops and a permanent installation carries both strategic and political importance. Rotational forces demonstrate allied commitment and provide regular military activity, while a permanent base could signal a deeper institutional commitment to the country’s defense relationship with the United States.

Warsaw has devoted substantial resources to defense and currently allocates about 5% of its gross domestic product to military spending. The country has also worked to build up its armed forces and encourage a larger American role in regional security. Those efforts reflect Polish concerns that the conflict in Ukraine has altered Europe’s security environment for the long term.

European Force Review Adds Uncertainty

Trump’s announcement arrives as his administration carries out a formal assessment of the US military footprint in Europe. That review has created unease among some allies, who fear Washington could eventually reduce troop levels or shift resources away from the continent.

A permanent base agreement with Poland would therefore carry implications beyond the host country. It could reassure states on NATO’s eastern edge that the United States remains committed to collective defense, even as broader decisions about American deployments in Europe are being evaluated.

At the same time, any future base would need to fit into wider NATO planning and the alliance’s existing network of forces, facilities and readiness arrangements. Poland is a member of both NATO and the European Union, and its defense posture is closely tied to the security of neighboring allies as well as to developments in Ukraine.

The discussions are unfolding while Washington has also faced criticism from several European countries over access to NATO bases during its war with Iran. Those tensions have highlighted the practical and political importance of host-country support for US military operations overseas.

No specific location has been disclosed, and Trump’s message did not indicate when construction or a formal agreement might begin. Still, the public statements from both presidents suggest that the issue has advanced beyond a general political aspiration. For Poland, a permanent American base would represent another step in its effort to secure a central role in NATO’s defense planning. For the United States, it would reinforce one of its closest military partnerships in Central and Eastern Europe.
