Research into heat-related sleep disruption has only recently gained recognition as a crucial indicator of how climate change influences both physical wellness and psychological health. A comprehensive international research effort gathered 165 million nights of sleep data collected from nearly 318,000 individuals utilizing wearable devices and under-mattress monitoring systems. Their findings, published in July, revealed that when nighttime temperatures increase from approximately 12 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius, individuals face roughly a 40 percent greater likelihood of sleeping fewer than six hours.

“Sleep is a fundamental physiological necessity essential for human immune function, mental health, and daily well-being,” stated Bowen Chu, a researcher affiliated with Nanjing University’s School of Atmospheric Sciences in China, who co-authored a March study examining the potential economic consequences of climate-driven sleep erosion in children.

The human body requires adequate rest to maintain cognitive capabilities, memory retention, and emotional stability. Ty Ferguson, a research fellow at Australia’s Adelaide University specializing in climate-driven sleep disturbance and its health and social ramifications, emphasized that humans cannot sustain these functions when sleeping less than seven hours nightly. Ferguson was not involved in the July publication but has extensively studied related topics.

Beyond mood regulation and attention span, interrupted sleep patterns contribute to elevated risks of diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, according to Ferguson’s research. The cumulative nature of this problem makes it particularly insidious.

“Unlike traditional climate impact research focused often on extreme weather events, understanding sleep loss allows scientists to quantify the gradual, day-to-day, and cumulative effects of ambient temperature rise on the everyday lives and health of global populations,” Chu explained to DW.

Kelton Minor, an associate professor at Denmark’s University of Copenhagen, highlighted that nighttime temperatures are climbing more rapidly than daytime temperatures. His research team, collaborating with the World Sleep Society, has advocated for establishing a global sleep task force to better comprehend and prepare for increasing sleep depletion as the planet warms. Cloud patterns play a significant role in this phenomenon; unlike daytime conditions where clouds reflect sunlight, nighttime clouds absorb heat and radiate it back toward Earth, amplifying global warming effects.

Underreported and Widening Inequalities

Kim van Daalen, an environmental epidemiologist at the University of Cambridge and co-author of a recently published paper titled “Sleep loss in a warming world,” noted that sleep deprivation remains underreported as a climate consequence. “It doesn’t produce a dramatic single event — no headline death toll, not as visible damage,” van Daalen observed. “It accumulates quietly, night after night, which makes it easy to miss in coverage that tends to focus on acute heat wave deaths or hospitalizations.”

The consequences extend beyond individual health. “Heat-related sleep loss is likely to widen existing health and socioeconomic inequalities,” van Daalen explained. Children may experience difficulties with concentration, learning, and emotional regulation, while older adults and individuals with chronic conditions face greater cardiovascular and metabolic strain during periods of insufficient rest.

“Chronic sleep loss driven by high temperatures is associated with decreased labor productivity, reduced learning efficiency, potentially an increased risk of traffic accidents, and heightened long-term healthcare burdens on society,” Chu stated regarding the broader societal implications of sleep interruption.

Poor sleep quality creates cascading effects throughout daily life. “Poor sleep makes it harder to work, learn, care for others and maintain good health,” Chu added, noting that low-income households face disproportionate exposure due to inadequate home ventilation and limited access to cooling solutions.
