The drugs produced by this network are primarily synthetic in nature, with mephedrone being the main product. Suyudi provided additional details about the composition of these substances, noting that “This is a mixture of cocaine and MDMA or ecstasy.” The production of such compounds requires specialized facilities and expertise, which the Russian network has successfully established within Bali’s borders.

The Gianyar Laboratory Raid

The existence of this extensive network came to light following the dismantling of an illegal laboratory located in Gianyar, Bali. During this coordinated operation, law enforcement officers successfully seized 7.8 kilograms of mephedrone and apprehended one Russian citizen involved in the operation. Following the discovery in Bali, Suyudi announced that the BNN is actively coordinating with law enforcement authorities in Russia to dismantle the network at its source. “We continue to unearth and expose the international network that we are pursuing in Russia,” he stated, emphasizing the bilateral cooperation necessary to address such transnational criminal enterprises effectively.

Additional Arrests and Smuggling Attempts

BNN Deputy for Narcotics Eradication Inspector General Aswin Sipayung revealed that the agency has recently uncovered another drug network operating within Bali. This separate operation resulted in the arrest of three Russian citizens who were serving as couriers and controllers within the network. These individuals were apprehended while attempting to smuggle hashish to Thailand using Thai Airways, demonstrating the network’s international reach beyond Indonesia’s borders.

During this particular operation, authorities successfully seized three kilograms of hashish as evidence. The arrest of these couriers highlights the logistical complexity of the drug trade and the multiple layers of personnel involved in moving substances across international boundaries.

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Retired TNI General Djamari Chaniago emphasized that drug eradication remains one of the government’s highest priorities. According to Djamari, Indonesia’s aspiration to achieve the Golden Generation 2045 can only be realized if the younger generation remains free from drug abuse.
